Via a 15 hour night train we arrived in Bucharest. The city at first is drab and grey--filled with communist bloc buildings. Yet there are signs of better days ahead springing out here and there.
Its interesting going to the baby orphanage as it is located in the hospital--that way they don't have to count them as orphans--which is important as they are working to get into the EU.
The missionaries said that we went to a good hospital as there was one nurse for every 6 babies often its one for 18-20 infants. The babies are fed and changed but do not get taken out of the cribs to play or be held--often the bottle is just propped up next to them.
We could tell that the kids were behind normal development in that they have difficultly sitting up and often don't crawl at all and just learn to walk from pulling themselves up in the cribs. They have closed off all foreign adoptions as it is embarrassing for an European country to be adopting out their children they say but unfortunately for the children this means they have even less of a chance of finding a home.

did you get any photos of the orphanage? i would love to see. looking forward to hearing more about that. i bet your heart was ripped out.
